The Power of a Smile

Have you ever stopped to think about the power of a smile?

Over the last six years, I’ve traveled extensively for work, from Las Vegas to Orlando, Los Angeles to east Africa. Walking swiftly through airport after airport surrounded by busy and indifferent strangers can be incredibly isolating. If you’ve ever walked through a busy mall, stood on a subway platform with a crowd of people looking at their phones or staring straight ahead, or yes, ran to try to catch your connecting flight, you’ve likely felt this same feeling. But at some point in my travels I made the decision to try to catch the occasional eye contact of my fellow travelers and when I do, hit them with a genuine and radiant smile.

It’s magical to witness the transformation when you’ve shared your smile with a stranger.

Stressed and tense faces soften. Eyes sparkle. And smiles are returned.

A smile can say so much. To another weary traveler it says, “I’m with you. Almost there.” To a mother struggling with a fussy toddler it says, “I’ve been there, sister.” To a scared child it says, “It’s okay. You’re safe with all of us.”

I know that I would not have the chance to experience these heart-warming moments – smiles exchanged with perfect strangers – if I didn’t feel confident in my smile. We all know those people who hide their smiles, close their mouths when a camera is pulled out, look down and away instead of engaging. That may even describe you. In honor of Self Improvement month, which just ended yesterday, I’d like to challenge you to do something in the month now starting that makes you feel more confident. In fact, I’d love for you to take a step towards improving your confidence and then come share that step with us in the comments of this post.
