Spilt Milk: A Book Review
Do you have one of those friends, or maybe it’s your mom, who will tell you what seems at first to be just an interesting story? She engages you, draws you in, makes you laugh. Then, at the end of her story, there is suddenly a lesson to be learned that you never saw coming, but that you needed all along.
This is the exact feeling I got when reading Spilt Milk: Devotions for Moms by Linda Vujnov. The tone is never judgemental and instead always comes from a place of understanding. I began reading this book while stuck on a tarmac for two hours, desperately hoping my plane would take off shortly. I had stayed up all night the night before and felt that sitting still on a stationary plane might be the death of me. Instead, I was pulled in by Linda’s words. I wanted to elbow the man in the business suit sitting next to me and say, “Read this! It’s so true! Yes!!” but I thought he might not understand.
Moms will understand this book, and I believe many will find comfort in its message. At first I dog-eared pages I wanted to return to later, only to realize quickly that I would have a book filled with turned over corners. Instead, I reached for a pen and did what my college literature professors always told me to do – I wrote notes, I circled, I underlined. This is a favorite passage, and I find it to be very fitting in my life right now:
“As Paul wrote to the Romans, ‘We also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character; hope.’ (Romans 5:3-4) Hope is the result of our utter dependence on God.”
This is a book that will live on my bedside table and that I will turn to from time to time for support, like words from an old friend.
You’ll like this if…you are looking for a daily devotional for mothers, either for yourself or for a gift. The book is divided into easily consumable sections that make for quick reading and welcome re-reading.
You won’t like this if…you are not looking for a Christian devotional. While the anecdotes will ring true for any parent, this book is rooted in scripture from start to finish, which is, to be frank, not for everyone.
