We’re just a few days away from the official start of fall. While here in the Mid-Atlantic we’re still reaching 80-plus degrees most days, I’m contemplating taking inventory of the sweaters and winter coats and all the other necessities, as if in three days it will magically turn colder and I’ll need to start bundling up.
But really, this is my very favorite season. Or un-season, as the case may be. The post-summer, pre-fall period is just simply magical. Why, you ask?
The days between Labor Day and cool weather are what beach area residents long for each year. The throngs of people who descend on us each summer have, for the most part, gone home. This is the time where we can truly enjoy the blessing of living at the beach.
The crazy work schedules of “the season” are coming to an end. My husband generally works 6 day weeks all summer long, but once we pass Labor Day, he can add a weekday off. It’s wonderful to have a day where he’s home with me, while the kids are at school. It’s an amazing chance to reconnect.
The peacefulness of a quiet, cool evening is so relaxing. I love to sit on the porch in the air just cool enough to need a light jacket, long after the kids have gone to bed, and just be. Existing in the stillness of the night air, listening to the sounds of the world around me, puts me in a reflective, appreciative mood and gives me a chance to let go of all of the things that rush through my mind in a typical day.
The craziness of summer is behind us and the hustle and bustle of the fall and winter holidays are just slightly out of reach. Do you love this time of year as much as I do? What are your favorite things?
