Mom’s the Word on Dinner – Our Healthy Dinnertime Routine

I’ve worked very hard over the last few months to change the way I eat – when, what, how.  The results have been wonderful for me as I’ve lost weight and improved my health, but the wonderful bonus has been that my family now eats healthier, more balanced meals.  I have always fed my children healthier food than what I eat – fresh fruit every day, carefully chosen lunches – but now dinnertime has been transformed.  While we are making better choices at dinnertime than we used to, I still would like to cook more often and continue to try new recipes.

Ragu has been a staple in my meal planning since I moved out on my own for the first time after college, and we continue to use Ragu in our meals at least once a week. The ease of using Ragu in our recipes has made it possible to try new, healthier recipes without drastically altering our dinnertime routine.  Without any fanfare, Ragu has decreased the amount of sodium in their sauces and also now offers sauce with two full servings of veggies – perfect for my family.

Our two favorite new recipes are Roasted Ratatouille Wraps and Ragu® No Frying Chicken Parmesan.  Both recipes are quick and easy, which is exactly what we need as we transition quickly from homework and piano practice into mealtime.  I had the chance to try the Roasted Ratatouille Wraps while visiting the Unilever test kitchens as a Moms the Word on Dinner Ambassador and I knew immediately that they’d work in my home.  My kids are not huge veggie fans, but the wraps make veggies fun.  Bonus?  They love the word Ratatouille thanks to a favorite movie.  Score!  As for the chicken parm, that is one of my husband’s favorite meals, but frying chicken is not in my schedule or on my healthy-eating radar.  He actually makes this recipe for our family because it is quick, easy, and just as delicious as the fried version.

Be sure to check out both the Roasted Ratatouille Wraps and the Ragu No Frying Chicken Parmesan.

What are your tips to eating healthy meals without disrupting your hectic dinnertime routine?

  • We rely on the crock pot on Mondays with dance class and on Tuesdays when we have Daisies. But seem to be in a rut with our recipes. My husband seems to be willing to eat anything that comes in a wrap or between two pieces of bread so I’m interested in those ratatouille wraps. We’re going on a Disney Cruise at the end of Feb so I’m extra interested in eating healthy to loose some weight!

    • I have GOT to start using the crock pot more often. I know I have a crock pot recipe book somewhere!!

I just bookmarked the No Frying Chicken Parmesan recipe on Ragu’s site. It looks so simple to make. Thank you, Amy!

    • And it’s really great! My husband makes it for us often and the kids even like it.

  • […] I spent the second half of 2011 as a Ragu Mom’s the Word on Dinner ambassador because not a single week goes by without us using Ragu in at least one meal.  I truly love this product, and through this program I have had the privilege of learning more about not only changes made to lower sodium and increase the number of servings of vegetables in their sauces, but also about the creation process from the farm to the table.  My family has also tried a variety of new recipes during my time as a Mom’s the Word on Dinner ambassador, and I wrote previously about my two favorites – no fry chicken parm and roasted ratatouille wraps.
