Memorial Day Staycation

Next weekend Memorial Day will kick off the unofficial beginning of summer. Families will drive to the beach, fly to the mountains, and spend time with friends and family around campfires, restaurant tables, and swimming pools…but not as many families as in other years.

For some of us, the best much-needed break will be a Staycation! This Wednesday I will be sharing fun product ideas to have a Staycation at your home with the viewers of WUSA9, the DC area’s CBS affiliate, during the Living $MART segment. Watch from 5:00 to 6:00 p.m. eastern to see some great products and ideas!

Here is a sneak peek of some of the fun ideas as well as a chance to win some of the recommended products.

1. A Little Girls’ Weekend In:
Invite a couple of your daughter’s best friends, plus their moms, and add every little girl’s dream toy…The Easy Bake Oven. The Easy Bake Oven is back in its original aqua color, and at only $24.99, it makes having a fun holiday weekend with the girls affordable! The oven comes with three different mixes, two baking pans, two utensils, a pan pusher, two warming cups and recipes/instructions and is available at most major retailers (for ages 8 and up).

2. Fun in the Sun with a Splash!
Many local pools open their doors Memorial Day weekend, so rather than spend a ton to travel to the sun and surf with the family, buy a couple new water fun items and head to the pool instead!

Kelsyus Kids Original Canopy Chair: Let your little one lounge in style with this new children’s version of the Original Canopy Chair! For as little as $24.99, your children four and up can start the summer off on the right foot by feeling like a little prince or princess in this great chair. It’s a great way to beat the heat while enjoying the outdoors.

Spring Jam Basketball: Surprise your older kids, age 5 and up, this Memorial Day by bringing the game off the court and into the pool for hours of fun and friendly competition! Equipped with a pro-style grip basketball, swimmers can easily grasp the ball and maneuver around their opponent for the perfect shot. A twist and fold design makes storing and carrying the set a breeze so you can ‘bring your game’ to backyard pool parties and challenge your friends to a one-on-one competition. If you’re headed over to a friend’s pool party, you can grab this compact game at any major retailer and toss it in the car for an easy way to enhance your fun stay-at-home weekend. And starting at only $19.99, you won’t be breaking the bank!
Super Soaker 50: This year the Super Soaker celebrates
it’s 20th anniversary, and the Super Soaker 50 in retro colors and styling is back! I remember spending many summers running through the neighborhood backyards, squirting my brother and our friends. At only $14.99, you can purchase a couple Super Soaker 50’s at a fraction of the cost of a trip, and create your own water party in your backyard.

3. Surprise the Little Ones at Little Cost:

Celebrate the end of pre-school and the beginning of the summer by surprising your littlest ones with some fun new Play-Doh products! Always affordable and always fun, these latest Play-Doh gadgets are a great way for pre-schoolers to pass the time around the picnic table waiting for the burgers to grill while the bigger kids are running around with their Super Soakers!

Play-Doh Spaghetti Factory: For ages 3 and up and retailing for only $9.99 at any major retailer, this fun addition to your child’s Play-Doh collection will have kids ‘cooking’ up an impressive variety of Play-Doh pasta and noodle creations while dad works at the grill! Simply place the bowl or plate atop the noodle factory, push down the arms, and a big portion of Play-Doh pasta appears. Add ‘yummy’ looking toppings like Play-Doh meatballs, tomatoes or shrimp using the selection of handy half-molds. Set includes three 3-ounce cans of colorful Play-Doh compound and a play mat.

Play-Doh Coco-Nutty Monkey: Have a tropical Memorial Day and surprise your tots for only $12.99 with this adorable monkey! Press down on the monkey’s tail and watch his hands ‘clap’ two coconut halves together to mold Play-Doh bananas, pineapples or mini monkeys. The colorful chimp also has wacky, giggle-inducing extruding hair and tongue features! The set comes complete with five 2-ounce cans of tropical colored Play-Doh compound.

4. Have a Neighborhood Family Game Night:

Whether you’re hiding from the rain or looking to cool down after a hot day in the sun, a Family Game Night is always a great idea! For some great game ideas for kids and adults of all ages, give Gamewright a try! My daughter first discovered Gamewright when she chose Rat-a-Tat Cat for her birthday. She has since found that she loves Wig Out and Sleeping Queens just as much, and we no longer play cards without the help of The Original Little Hands Card Holder. Gamewright’s games and puzzles are not only incredibly unique and award-winning, but they also encourage children to think outside the box and use math and logic skills while having fun. For more games by age range, check out Gamewright’s website at www.Gamewright.com. The games and puzzles shown here range in price from $5.99 to $29.99.
