While many view Memorial Day as a time for cookouts, campouts, and kicking off the summer, there is so much more than just a long weekend to this holiday. Memorial Day is a time to remember those who gave their lives for the freedoms and safety that we are afforded in this country. Please take a little time out of your relaxing holiday weekend to remember those who gave the ultimate sacrifice.
Wear a Poppy – Wearing a poppy on Memorial Day is a traditional way to honor those who died in service to our country. VFW posts distribute artificial poppies, made by disabled veterans , to help raise funds for their Buddy Poppy program which helps to care for veterans, their families, and orphans of veterans.
Volunteer at a Veterans’ Cemetery – Check with your local Veterans’ Cemetery or other local cemeteries to see if there are opportunities to lay wreaths or flags for the Memorial Day holiday or if they need assistance with cleaning up the grounds of the facility.
Attend a Memorial Day Parade – In many areas, cities and towns host a Memorial Day parade. Dress up in your most patriotic gear, grab some flags to wave, and head out to salute those who have served our country.
Display the Red, White, and Blue – Decorate your home for the holiday! If you’re having a gathering of friends and family over the weekend, go all out with flag themed decorations, red, white, and blue food and drinks, and even some fun party favors or crafts for the kids.
Participate in the National Moment of Remembrance – On Monday at 3:00pm local time, you and your family can participate in the National Moment of Remembrance. MLB Baseball games will pause, AMTRAK trains will sound their whistles, and people all across the country will pause for one minute to reflect and vow to remember those who have sacrificed for our freedom.
Honor Those Still with Us – Though Memorial Day is historically about remembering the fallen, there are many veterans and service people who would sincerely appreciate your thanks and recognition. Help your children write a letter, make a craft, or simply take some time to visit who has served or is currently serving in our armed forces.
