Tomorrow morning at approximately 10:40 a.m. ET, the Disney Dream will be christened in Port Canaveral, Florida, and shortly thereafter head out to sea on its christening voyage. I will be present for this event and you can be, too, thanks to the livestreaming provided by the Disney Cruise Line! To watch the entire ceremony visit http://disneycruise.com/dream.
The christening of new ships reaches back as far as 4,000 years in recorded history to the Vikings who used blood to appease the gods when a new ship entered the water for the first time. The Greeks and Romans preferred water for purification, and during the Middle Ages, a celebratory glass of wine was offered up as a ceremonial christening of new ships, with some being offered to the ship herself as it was poured onto the deck. In 1690 the cup was removed from the ceremony entirely, and a bottle of wine christened new ships. Eventually, wine was replaced with the more expensive champagne that is generally used today.
What will christen the Disney Dream? Watch and find out!
Very cool!
With it being a Disney ship, shouldn’t it be non-alcoholic champagne?? 🙂
