Living Font: What are You Carrying?

Last week my daughter and I were driving to a birthday party, singing along to the radio at the top of our lungs.  Okay, so I was singing along at the top of my lungs and she was quietly singing along hoping that I wouldn’t hear her or even notice.  One of my favorite songs – needtobreathe’s Lay ‘Em Down – came on, and I noticed that Emma sang along with me again while we sang:

We’re all tied to the same old failing
Finding shelter in things we know
We’re all dirty like corrupted small towns
We’ll bring our troubles
We’ll bring our troubles
Lay ’em down

And then it hit me – does she realize what she’s singing?

I turned off the radio and asked her if she knew what it meant to lay down our burdens.  She said she thought she knew, but could I explain it to her just in case?  So we talked about Psalm 55, about casting our cares to the Lord, and as I spoke to her I thought about all of the burdens that I am carrying, the weight at times becoming overwhelming, too much to bear.

I asked her, Emma, do you understand now what the song is about?  She said she was sure she did now, and that she had already laid a burden down.  “I decided that I couldn’t keep worrying about getting braces so I prayed about it and now I’m going to let God take care of it for me.”

My shoulders felt lighter.  My heart felt full.

What are you carrying?

What a special moment for you to have shared with your daughter. I love how a song became more than a song. It became a valuable learning experience for your daughter. I love it when things work out that way. :-)
