This Mother’s Day my resolution is to make more time to get together with my mom friends. One of the nicest gifts I received when I became a mom seven years ago was the gift of friendship from the other moms around me. In the past, I’d made connections with fellow students, fellow teachers, fellow musicians, but once I became a stay-at-home mom, trapped in my home with a preemie who couldn’t leave, I became incredibly isolated. It wasn’t until I reached out to the other moms in my community that I found playgroups, a book club, a church community, phone buddies, email pals. It was then that I felt as though I was part of a community of moms, everyone turning to one another in times of need and triumph, for help or to just hang out. For every mom who has ever been in the midst of the baby blues or had the pleasure of wasting an afternoon chatting on the playground, you know how important it is to have the support of a circle of moms.
So Happy Mother’s Day to all the moms out there! And hopefully I’ll be spending more time with some of you soon.
