I have just returned home from watching a special screening of Avengers: Endgame with my twelve year old son.
I’m committed to my no spoilers oath, so read on without fear of ruination. I’ve got you.
Avengers: Endgame By The Numbers
- Three: Number of times my son tried to hand me a tissue because tears were running down my face. Flowing like a river, friends. Chin? Quivering.
- Zero: Number of extra scenes revealed at the end of the credits. The theory that was kicked around in the hallway was that any hidden endings will be added to the film after its official release this Thursday night. So only time will tell.
- Ten: Clint Barton. Forget Cap. Forget Winter Soldier. Thor who? I absolutely can’t get enough of Clint in this film. GIVE ME MORE CLINT.
- Two: The number of “passing of the torch” moments in the film. No spoilers.
- One: How many times the entire theater very nearly lost its collective mind cheering. There were plenty of other woohoo moments and scattered clapping, but there was just one YES, YES, THANK YOU, YES moment.
- Four: The number of people who left to use the bathroom. Friends, this film is over three hours long. I stayed in my seat. I did. This is unheard of for me. Surely that tells you all you need to know right there.
- Too Many to Count: The number of well-played and beautifully done references to past MCU films.
The Bottom Line
I don’t believe it was quite as good as Avengers: Infinity War. My son agrees. That film was simply too difficult to top. How could you possibly take my-jaw-is-still-on-the-floor-a-full-year-later to the next level?
But even with that assessment, it was still everything it needed to be, and I’m already looking forward to seeing it again as soon as possible. Be prepared for more pop culture references and laugh out loud moments than even the Guardians films, which to me are by far the funniest of the MCU. And if you have time, rewatch as many of the films from the MCU as possible before seeing Endgame. Trust me, you will thank me.
