How Can You Prevent Gum Disease?

This post is sponsored by P&G, but the opinions expressed are my own.

What feature do you love most about yourself? We all have something about us that stands out, the feature people compliment us on the most often. Mine is my smile. A quick flash of the pearly whites can go a long way. One of my favorite sayings is, “if you see someone without a smile, give them one.” Cheesey? Definitely. But, a smile really does go a long way.

Considering my smile is my best feature, I better make sure it lasts by taking good care of it. As an adult I can still hear my mom saying, “take care of your teeth, Amy, it’s the only set you get.” But, even as someone who is conscious of my smile, I’m not always as faithful as I should be when it comes to caring for my teeth.

Am I in Danger of Getting Gum Disease?

Did you know, according to the CDC, that 50% of U.S. adults have gum disease? That is a high percentage! Gum disease is an infection of the tissues that hold your teeth in place. It is most often caused by a buildup of plaque, a sticky film of bacteria, that hardens onto your teeth. This bacteria can lead to sore, bleeding gums, tooth pain while chewing, or loss of teeth.

Smoking is a big contributor to gum disease, as well as many of the foods that we eat. Without being properly protected, many foods and drinks like citrus, wine, fish, meats, and sugars can weaken the enamel on our teeth, causing gingivitis.

Some symptoms of gum disease include:

  • Bad breath that won’t go away
  • Red or swollen gums
  • Tender or bleeding gums
  • Painful chewing
  • Loose teeth
  • Sensitive teeth
  • Receding gums or longer appearing teeth

How Can You Prevent Gum Disease?

There is good news! Gum disease can be both treated and prevented by properly caring for your teeth. The first step toward healthy gums is a regular visit to the dentist office. Your dentist is able to remove the plaque and tartar that builds up on your teeth, as well as monitor the health of your gums. Between visits, it is important that we continue to regularly brush and floss our teeth to remove the bacteria that builds up over time.

Crest is a long-time trusted household name that provides oral care products for ourselves and our families. Recently, Crest has expanded its line of gum health-focused products with a new Crest Gum & Enamel Repair Toothpaste. It is specially designed to focus on boosting the repair of weakened enamel while also neutralizing hidden plaque bacteria along the gum line.

My family and I have been using Crest Gum & Enamel Repair Toothpaste for a few weeks now. Sometimes my gums will bleed if I get a little carried away while brushing, but I’ve noticed a reduction in how often this occurs. I’ve enjoyed using Crest Gum & Enamel Repair Toothpaste. It leaves my mouth feeling fresh, while I’m assured my teeth are protected between brushing from unwanted plaque buildup.
