Everything You Need to Know.
I once heard that Amish men walk an average of 18,000 steps a day, Amish women an average of 14,000. Most days I feel like I’m moving around a lot between going up and down the steps to meet my kids’ needs, walking them to and from the bus stop, going to and from the kitchen to refill my water bottle, but the truth is that the majority of my day is spent sitting right here in front of my computer. While I’m not ready to turn over my computer (or my electricity!) and become a 14,000 steps a day Amish woman, I was curious how many steps I take on an average day so I joined the Omron Fitness Challenge.
Omron sent me their Omron HJ-112 Pocket Pedometer, which was rated #2 by CR recently and #1 for over 10 years, and I began wearing it every day. A couple of days I challenged myself to hit 10,000 steps, but the closest I got was 7,000+. What I’ve found is that, sadly, on an average day I’m right around the 2,000 steps range. Ever since I began losing weight last summer, I’ve tried to go for a walk as many days as possible, but actually seeing the difference it makes to take twenty minutes to walk in the morning was shocking. Look at the pedometer on the mornings when I walked two miles to start my day:
By 9:15 in the morning I had doubled my steps from the days when I did not go for a quick walk. Now that I can see it right there before me how much taking the time to exercise truly makes a huge difference, I am even more motivated to get out there and walk each morning. Even on days when I can’t make the two+ mile loop, I know that it is still worth it to just go for a quick one mile walk to jump start my steps for the day. I’m hoping that continuing to use the Omron pedometer and closely monitor my movement – or lack there of – will help me reach my goal of losing ten more pounds by this summer.
