May is Better Hearing & Speech Month and the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association is working to educate the public about balanced use of technology in young children, as a majority of U.S. children use technology at a formative stage in their development.
One of the points that ASHA is working to share is the importance of taking time for verbal communication, especially with young children, as this is the primary way that children learn. Communication disorders as causes of disability in children are on the rise. Given that, it is important that parents learn the early signs of speech/language and hearing disorders. ASHA’s public education campaign— Identify the Signs (http://IdentifytheSigns.org)—can help.
Another problem affecting children due to personal technology is noise-induced hearing loss. Be sure to model safe listening practices when using headphones and teach children to keep the volume down and take listening breaks! Check out these Summer Safety Tips to Protect Hearing!
