Just in time for back to school, an international study conducted by Hear the World shows that noise levels in the classroom have a considerable impact on a child’s physical health and academic performance. The study found that the students reported feeling distracted, irritated and stressed out by high levels of noise during class. Continuous exposure to loud noises inside and outside of the classroom not only impacts ability to concentrate, but also puts students at risk for premature hearing loss.
Although the study found that noise in the classroom is perceived as a nuisance by students, an increasing number of young people are actively exposing their ears to high noise levels in their free time, including frequent use of MP3 players at high volume levels. According to the Hear the World survey, 79 percent of MP3 users in the U.S. between 14-19 years of age set the volume higher than 50 percent of the possible volume range and 51 percent set the volume to 70 percent of the possible volume range or higher. Long-term exposure to 80-85 decibels, or any more than 15 minutes exposure to 100 decibels, can lead to hearing loss. Music players like iPods can top 100 decibels when turned all the way up.
We hope that you will join us for a Hear the World Twitter Event to raise awareness of this growing problem and the increased need for education around this issue of hearing loss in our youth.

About Hear the World
Hear the World is a global initiative by leading hearing system manufacturer Phonak created to raise awareness about the importance of hearing. The initiative calls attention to the social and emotional impact of hearing loss and addresses prevention of and solutions to a problem that affects more than 16% of the world’s population. Bryan Adam, Annie Lennox, Sting, Placido Domingo and other renowned personalities support the Hear the World initiative as ambassadors. In the context of Hear the World initiative, Phonak has established the non-profit Hear the World Foundation to improve the quality of life of people with hearing loss through financial and technical assistance. The foundation is committed to the prevention of hearing loss as well as the support of people with hearing loss and their families.

I fully agree that the high levels of everything is hurting our children. My middle son has been diagnosed with Auditory Processing difficulties and ADHD so anything distracting is avoided.

My 7yo son will be going to school with a hearing aid this year. Thankfully the hearing screening at the elementary school caught his hearing loss or I may have never known. So excited about this Twitter party!

I am affected by hearing loss, as many of my family members are. I am SO psyched that someone is LISTENING to the importance of hearing loss prevention, early loss detection, AND to educate people of what it is really like to be even moderately hearing impaired and how insidious the loss can be. Some loss runs genetically in my family, but I found greater loss when coming down with a virus and Lyme; both have stolen much of precious hearing from me and has and IS changing my life daily.

I’ll see you there! My daughter has an ipod and if I hear her music at all, I get the ipod…so, she keeps the volume at a reasonable range!

I left a comment but it didnt post…I have hearing loss, as does a lot of my family. Genetics stole a lot of it, but also I was hit hard by a virus and Lyme that took even more. I am so glad there is help out there show others how to prevent and how to diagnose those with hearing loss…especially children. It really is a huge disability and am so happy HTW is helping to educate others about it!
thank you!
