4thathome header

I can’t believe how quickly the summer season is flying by! In just a couple short weeks, the 4th of July will be upon us and it’s time to start making plans!

While it’s always fun to attend community parades, celebrations, and fireworks displays, sometimes you just want a nice, laid back 4th at home with your family. Here are some fun ideas to have just as festive a day at home without having to fight crowds!

4th rainy CollageDecorate your home with patriotic crafts – Show your patriotic spirit by decorating indoors and out with the Red, White, and Blue! Create fun crafts from items around the house or visit your local dollar store for inexpensive holiday decorations. Want some inspiration? Check out our Rainy Day 4th of July post or the Pinterest board at the bottom of this post!

Have some water fun – Break out the hose, set up a sprinkler, or jump in the pool. Beat the heat with some time in the water, without fighting the crowds at the community pool or beach. Even a squirt gun battle or water balloon fight will be a great way to splash around in the yard.

Hold family fun night – Make the entire day a family day of games, competitions, and family activities. Check out our Family Field Day post for lots of great activities and games that your whole family will love. Not feeling super active? Break out your favorite board games for a marathon play session.

Create a delicious menu – Food is a huge part of any family celebration and the 4th of July is no different! Work together to make a meal of your favorite summer flavors. Fire up the grill for some classic burgers and hot dogs or make something a little more fancy. Our 4th of July Menu Ideas post has a lot of delicious options to get you started!

Find a quiet spot for fireworks – Find a secluded spot, away from the crowds to watch your local fireworks. Or if you don’t want to leave home and can’t see any right from the yard, watch on TV from the air conditioned comfort of your living room. Check your local listings for times and stations for Boston Pops Fireworks Spectacular on CBS, A Capitol Fourth on PBS, and Macy’s 4th of July Spectacular on NBC. If you’re looking for a little pixie dust for your patriotic evening, keep an eye on the Disney Parks Blog, as Walt Disney World Resort often live streams their 4th of July fireworks celebration.
