Festive Fridays: Rainy Day 4th of July Fun

Festive Friday 4th rainy

The 4th of July means family, friends, cookouts, and fireworks – lots of time outdoors and plenty of fun in the sun! But what do you do when you’re hit with a rainy day or an evening summer thunderstorm cancels the fireworks show? There is a threat of storms here on Monday night, so I’ve come up with some fun ideas for the 4th, in case we’re stuck indoors!

4th rainy CollageMake your own fireworks – No, you can’t set off bottle rockets and sparklers in the house, but there are a couple of ways to enjoy “fireworks” that are almost as much fun as the real thing! Fill balloons with confetti and pop them for some explosive fun (though cleanup will be required) or Erin at A Parenting Production has some fun fireworks spin art that will keep the kids entertained.

Show your patriotism – Have the kids decorate the house in red, white, and blue streamers and crafts and have a parade around the living room with flags and patriotic music.

Have a sing and dance-a-long – See who knows the lyrics to the most patriotic songs with a family sing-a-long. When it gets dark, turn off the lights and crack open some glow sticks, then throw on Katy Perry’s Firework for a dance party, just because FIREWORKS!

Check out televised fireworks – While it’s not quite the same effect as attending fireworks in the flesh, watching televised fireworks broadcasts are a great way to enjoy the beauty without dealing with weather, traffic, and crowds.

Check out your local listings for station and times – PBS is showing A Capitol 4th from Washington, D.C., CBS will have Boston Pops Firework Spectacular and NBC is carrying Macy’s 4th of July Fireworks Spectacular.

Happy Independence Day!
