Last night I partied on Twitter with Andrea and Melissa, authors of Klout For Dummies and Blog Design For Dummies. Those two incredibly resourceful books are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to blogging resources from the For Dummies family of books. Peter Pollock recently published Web Hosting For Dummies, a guide to finding the right platform for your blog and utilizing its features.
Anyone who follows me on Twitter has probably noticed that I frequently run into issues with my hosting company. My site periodically goes down or email simply stops functioning for a couple hours. The truth is that I grabbed the first hosting package recommended to me by a friend once I decided to make the move from Blogger to self-hosted WordPress. In the name of “I have too much to do already,” I didn’t put any time or thought into the selection of my blog host, and I’ve paid the price for my haste.
Peter’s book…which I really needed a couple years ago!…holds the hand of the reader and without condescension, walks them through understanding what web hosting really means. I love Peter’s analogy of a blog as a store with the web host as the building where you’re renting space for your “store” (blog). Peter then guides the reader through understanding everything from databases to domains to moving to a new host (this is the section I need most!).
Web Hosting For Dummies is likely not a book that you’re going to sit down and read from cover to cover right out of the gate. I recommend getting to know the table of contents first and then skimming the content from front to back. After a quick fly-by, circle back and dive into the section that applies to you most where you are now on your blogging journey (ahem…moving to a new host…).
Don’t miss the goodies in the Parts of Ten section, a must-read in any For Dummies book. Peter provides some great tools including free apps and essential online resources.
Thanks, Peter and Wiley publishing, for providing me with a copy of Web Hosting For Dummies to review! Now to find a new web host for this site…
