Ever since writing about texting and driving in Raising Digital Families For Dummies, the topic has weighed heavily on my mind. I find myself flinching when reaching for my phone at red lights. I notice my children watching if my phone is still in my hand while I’m pushing the ignition button.
All summer long I’m going to be partnering with AT&T’s It Can Wait campaign as an advocate helping to save lives during what are called the 100 Deadliest Days for Teen Drivers, those days between Memorial Day and Labor Day when teens are home and on the road. It Can Wait advocates like myself will be sharing reasons each day why texting and driving can wait. The messages along with pictures will be shared across social media on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and Pinterest as well as at ItCanWait.com where you and your teens can take the pledge to not text and drive.
AT&T is not alone in the quest to protect teens on the road this summer. For the first time ever, Verizon, T-Mobile and Sprint have partnered with AT&T to spread the message that texting can wait. Their joint efforts will support a new national advertising campaign, a nationwide texting-while-driving simulator tour, retail presence in tens of thousands of stores, and outreach to millions of consumers with a special focus throughout the summer months.
By now, it seems that the dangers of texting and driving would be clear. Unfortunately, texting and driving continues to be on the rise, including in the 43% of teens who admit to texting while driving.
