THON: Penn State Dance Marathon Fundraiser Twitter Party

The summer before ninth grade, one of my closest friends was diagnosed with abdominal cancer.  Thirteen years old and scared, I felt completely helpless.  I organized a group of friends, and meeting at my house, we planned a school dance to raise money to fight our friend’s cancer.  We secured a free DJ from a local radio station as well as food to be sold at the event.  Sadly, we lost our friend, Krista, just before her fundraiser dance.  We held the event anyway in her honor, giving the funds to her family to help pay for the costs of her healthcare and services.

Two hours away in State College, PA, students at Penn State University were raising money with music as well with THON, the largest student-run philanthropy in the United States.  THON benefits the Four Diamonds Fund at Penn State Hershey Children’s Hospital.  Four Diamonds assists children being treated for cancer and their families through superior care, comprehensive support and innovative research. Since 1977, THON has raised more than $89 million for Four Diamonds and the fight to conquer pediatric cancer.

The Penn State IFC/Panhellenic Dance Marathon is a year-long fundraising and awareness campaign for the fight against pediatric cancer. This effort engages more than 15,000 students across the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania in hopes of finding a cure.

The year culminates with a 46 hour no-sitting, no-sleeping dance marathon known as THON Weekend. This event is held at Penn State’s Bryce Jordan Center each year in the month February. In 2012, THON raised a record-breaking $10.68 million and was able to donate 96% of funds raised directly to the Four Diamonds Fund.

This year you can join THON from home in the first ever Global Line Dance this weekend to support pediatric Cancer awareness and raise money for the Four Diamonds Fund.  To learn more, visit Thon.org/DanceWithUs and tweet with us at the…

THON is honestly the most amazing experience EVER both as a participant and as an observer. I danced in 1992 when I was a sophomore and I will forever be proud of it. It was the hardest, most incredible 48 hours of my life. For the kids!
