31 Days of Disney: EPCOT Turns 30

Today EPCOT, the second theme park built at Walt Disney World, celebrated the 30th anniversary of its opening day.  EPCOT – Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow – opened on October 1, 1982, and a year and a half later my family visited.  Milestones at Walt Disney World always make me think of my own favorite memories, so I spent some time digging through old pictures to find these from my trip in 1984 when I was six years old.

Waiting in line for the monorail back to Walt Disney World’s Contemporary Resort. Dig those socks.

Please note my green Pac-Man visor.

While I have heard from many parents that EPCOT is “the park that they skip,” it is actually one of my family’s favorites.  Tomorrow I’m going to share the rides and attractions that make our don’t miss list as well as some of our favorite pictures from this century.

Happy Birthday, EPCOT!

  • […] Day Two – EPCOT Turns 30 […]

  • Am not even lying. I totally had the same Pac-Man visor. It will now be my mission to find a photo and send it to you!

    • That Pac-Man visor is still on my parents’ boat and once a summer I see it again. You’ve got to find a picture of yours!

  • These pictures are priceless! Epcot is so much more magical than so many give it a chance to be ~ I cannot imagine a visit to Walt Disney World Resort without it=) Thanks for sharing such awesome memories!

  • Love these!

Now I’m thinking I have to dig out some of mine…

  • Yesterday on FB I posted a photo of me with my two favorite guys from Epcot, Dreamfinder and Figment. I have shared this photo before, but it seemed really appropriate on the big day. I also want to go and find more of the photos from the way back machine at Walt Disney World. I know my parents have a lot of them in albums.

  • Very interesting! Beautiful photos!!

  • EPCOT is my favorite park in Walt Disney World! I absolutely adored Figment and Dreamfinder from Journey Into Imagination. I wish they would bring back Dreamfinder. It’s not the same without him. 🙁

I also love the World Showcase, especially Maelstrom in Norway. What’s your favorite EPCOT ride?
